  • DAY 01

    Arrive in Hanoi

Upon your arrival at Hanoi airport look for our driver who will be waiting for you with a sign bearing your name. The journey from the airport to your hotel will take approximately 30 minutes and is an entertaining experience full of chaotic traffic, distinctive architecture and overloaded motorbikes. This evening, a welcome dinner at local restaurant. All motor bikes are collected and be ready for tomorrow.

  • DAY 02

    Hanoi to Mai Chau

In the morning we visit the Ho Chi Minh Trail museum on the outskirts of Hanoi. We jump on the bikes at the museum and head out through rural roads that gradually give way to limestone mountains. After a light lunch in Hoa Binh, at the base of a Russian-built hydro dam, we cross two mountain passes before descending to the Thai village of Mai Chau. Overnight in a Thai stilt house in Mai Chau to enjoy a cultural show of Thai dancing and a range of special local fruit liquors - 140km.

  • DAY 03

    Mai Chau

In the morning we explore the high plateau north of Mai Chau, giving us a chance to see Hmong and Dao villages as they have lived for centuries. In the evening we enjoy a traditional music and dancing performance (if available). Overnight in long house - 80km.

  • DAY 04

    Mai Chau to Vinh

We will leave the valley of Mai Chau to crossing the Ma River several times until we join the Ho Chi Minh Highway. An incredible improvement on the old Ho Chi Minh Trail, the highway smoothly guides us due south through the backwaters of the country, close to the Laos border. After lunch we head eastwards to the coast for an overnight stay in the city of Vinh. The birthplace of Ho Chi Minh, Hoang Tru, is a mere 14km NW of Vinh – 295km.

  • DAY 05

    Vinh to Phong Nha

We travel south on a section of the busy Highway 1 until we join the newest section of the Ho Chi Minh Highway which gives us a smooth ride with little traffic and amazing vistas. In the afternoon you have the opportunity to visit the Phong Nha Cave, which is considered as the most outstanding karst ecosystems in the world and has been a site of mystery and wonderment for locals and visitors alike for centuries. The interior of the caves is magnificent with rock formations that excite the imagination.

  • DAY 06

    Phong Nha to Khe Sanh

After an early breakfast we head south through the foothills, which were once sprayed heavily by Agent Orange, towards the former Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). A chance to visit Vinh Moc tunnels. A highly impressive complex of tunnels, Vinh Moc is the remains of a coastal North Vietnamese village that literally went underground in response to unremitting American bombing. More than 90 families disappeared into three levels of tunnels running almost 2km in all, and continued to live and work while bombs rained down around them Todays ride is on the old path of the Ho Chi Minh Trail. We have the road virtually to ourselves as we travel on what most consider the most scenic section of this tour. Surround by lush bush on both sides makes for a stunning ride.

  • DAY 07

Khe Sanh - Vinh Moc - Hue

A quick look at the museum before we head south over the Da Krong Bridge (built by the Cubans in 1973) into the infamous A Shau valley, an area of intense wartime activity. Passing Hamburger Hill and mountains still barren due to the extended effects of Agent Orange, we arrive at A Luoi, for lunch. Then, cruising through green backcountry down the steep Me Oi Pass, we continue on to the historic imperial city of Hue, which lies along the banks of the Perfume River.

  • DAY 08

Situated on the Perfume River, Hue is the former imperial capital of feudal Vietnam and is rich in culture and history. During the War it was the focus of the 1968 Tet Offensive when it was occupied by the north for 28 days and suffered terrible losses in the ensuing battle. We spend the day exploring the former emperors tombs, Imperial Citadel and the Thien Mu Pagoda. – 60km.

  • DAY 09

Hue - Da Nang - Hoi An

This morning we explore Hue’s Imperial city and Forbidden Purple Palace before begin your 160km journey to Hoi An travelling through coastal rice paddies to the fishing village of Lang Co, before taking the scenic mountainous route over the spectacular Hai Van Pass. You will climb to 496 m (1,627 ft) on a road quoted in the Top Gear Program as "a deserted ribbon of perfection—one of the best coast roads in the world." Shortly before lunch you will arrive in Hoi An, a charming World Heritage village which is being beautifully restored and preserved that will captivate you immediately. No matter what you like you will find it here, whether it is shopping, restaurants, photography, history, architecture, golf, fishing, swimming, scuba, abseiling, or massage and lazing around. Travelling by Motorbike

This Vietnam Motorobike Holiday is not for first time motorbike riders. You'll need to have ridden a bike before, hold a valid international license and make sure you know how to handle a four stroke bike. This tour is liberating and beautiful. When you arrive in Hanoi you'll be given a safety briefing and introduced to your support crew. A truck will drive alongside us and will always be on call for mechanical and medical support or to give you a rest from riding.

Minimum number of people

Due to the large number of support staff required for this trip we recommend a minimum booking of 6 people per trip. Any less and the cost of the trip becomes very expensive.

Travelling way into the countryside means we won't always be staying in complete comfort. This journey includes a mixture of 2 and 4 star hotels.

  • Motorbike and support crew
  • English speaking local guide
  • Standard 4 stroke bike
  • Permits
