An in-depth War History Tour that will give students a vivid insight into the recent conflicts in Vietnam and leave them with an appreciation for how a nation can forgive and move forward.The tour is focused on war history with plenty of play days.

  • DAY 01

    Arrive Ho Chi Minh City

    The group will be greeted at the Saigon airport by the Wide Eyed Tours team and transferred by air-conditioned bus to the hotel in downtown Ho Chi Minh City. An afternoon city tour Sai Gon city tour will include the absorbing War Remnants museum, the historic central Post Office, the famous Notre Dame Cathedral and the Reunification Palace.

  • DAY 02

    Cu Chi Tunnel Tour

    Today’s Cu Chi Tunnels Tour Cu Chi Tunnels Tour begins with a 1.5 hour drive to the countryside. Upon arrival the students will be shown a short propaganda film that was produced in 1969. Then they will have an opportunity to experience life in the tunnels and crawl through sections under supervision of the trained local Cu Chi guides. The tour will leave a lasting impression of the desperation and ingenuity of the Cu Chi guerrillas. Arriving back in Saigon ready for lunch and then plenty of free time in the afternoon for shopping.

  • DAY 03

    Saigon to Mekong Delta

    This active full day tour to the Mekong Delta is full of fun and exciting new foods to try. The students travel by air-conditioned bus for 2 hours to the city of My Tho where they will board a long narrow boat to explore the waterways of the Mekong Delta. During the tour they will sample fresh tropical fruit grown in the Mekong and enjoy a lunch of specialties from this region, including Elephant Ear fish. The group will return to Saigon late in the afternoon for a rest before dinner.

  • DAY 04

    Saigon to Vung Tau

    A 2-hour bus journey takes the group to the coastal town of Vung Tau, host to thousands of Australian and New Zealand troops during the war in the 1960’s and early 1970’s. The students will visit the White Palace the reclining Buddha pagoda and the markets of Vung Tau. There will also be some time to enjoy the beach.

  • DAY 05

    Vung Tau to Long Tan and Nui Dat Tour

    Today the students become immersed in the Australian and New Zealand military history in Vietnam and travel to the township of Baria, the Long Tan Battlefield and Nui Dat. They will attend a memorial service at the Long Tan Cross and visit the Long Phuoc Tunnels. Also included will be a visit to the local school where the students can donate school supplies and meet the children.

  • DAY 06

    Vung Tau to Hoi An

    After a short flight the group arrives in the central coastal city of Da Nang for a 45 minute transfer to the charming little town of Hoi An. The students will enjoy an orientation tour around the peaceful lantern lit streets, which are teeming with colourful shops, restaurants and galleries.

    Hoi An Cooking Class

    A fun day is planned with the students learning the secrets of Vietnamese cuisine at this hands on cooking class cooking class After the class they will then be able to enjoy the delicious meal they have prepared themselves. Then their afternoon is free to enjoy this beautiful town that is the perfect size for exploring.

  • DAY 08

    Hoi An to Marble Mountain and Hue

    In the morning the students will take a 30-minute journey by airconditioned bus to Marble Mountain, a cluster of 5 limestone and marble hills overlooking the Eastern Sea. The main mountain has many caves and pagodas dating from the early seventeenth century. After climbing the 150 steps the reward is a commanding view down the length of the coast. During the war in the 1960's the Huyen Kong cave within the mountain was the base for the Vietnamese revolutionaries. The tour continues through Da Nang and over the Hai Van Pass for a spectacular view of Da Nang and the harbor. Lunch will be taken at the coastal town of Lang Co before a further 80km journey to the historical city of Hue.

  • DAY 09

    Hue Full Day Tour

    This full day tour of Hue Hue is an exciting combination of culture, history, cuisine and scenery. It begins with a visit to the ancient citadel and Forbidden Purple City and continues to the Tien Mu Pagoda, then a tomb of the emperor, incense making and a delicious vegetarian banquet at a pagoda, which has been prepared by Buddhist monks. An unforgettable day.

  • DAY 10

    Hue to Hanoi

    A short flight and the tour arrives in Hanoi, Vietnam’s vibrant and colourful capital city. The journey from the airport to the hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter takes 45 minutes and is an entertaining experience. After checking in the group will be taken on an exciting orientation walking tour of the Old Quarter where the streets meander in a confusing unorganized tangle.

  • DAY 11

    Hanoi City Tour

    This morning’s Hanoi city tour will begin with a tour of the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum to learn about Uncle Ho’s great life and see the Presidential Gardens surrounding the Mausoleum. The tour continues to the Temple of Literature, Tran Quoc Pagoda and Hoa Lo Prison. The tour finishes after lunch, giving the students plenty of time to explore Hanoi’s Old Quarter and do some final shopping.

  • DAY 12

    Ha Long Bay Cruise

    After a three and a half hour journey on a private air-conditioned bus the group will arrive in Ha Long City and board a junk for an unforgettable cruise around the dramatic limestone karsts on Ha Long Bay. A delicious seafood banquet will be served on board and the cruise will include a visit to the Thien Cung cave. Then tour will return to Hanoi for a final night in the capital city.

    Depart Hanoi

    The transfer to the Hanoi airport will take 45 minutes in a private air-conditioned bus.

About the Tour

This Vietnam War History Tour begins in Saigon with a city tour of the major attractions on the day of arrival. The following day the tour travels to the Cu Chi Tunnels where the students will be amazed by the tenacity of the communist guerrillas and where they can scramble through the narrow tunnels themselves. The tour continues down the fascinating waterways of the Mekong Delta to marvel at the colourful life upon the water and enjoy the vast range of mouth watering locally grown tropical fruits. From Saigon the group travels to Vung Tau and Nui Dat where the Australians and Kiwis were stationed during the Vietnam War. This tour includes a ceremony of remembrance at Long Tan for those who lost their lives in 18th August 1966 at the battle of Long Tan. A short flight takes the group to the central coastal town of Hoi An, located on the Thu Bon River. Here the group will take a fun cooking class and enjoy the peaceful little streets of this charming hamlet. Then it is off on a scenic bus journey to the historic town of Hue to enjoy a healthy and tasty vegetarian banquet lunch at a pagoda prepared by Buddhist monks. After another short flight the tour arrives in Hanoi, an exotic and intoxicating city that thrills with its chaotic traffic, hectic architecture and ancient Old Quarter. The final leg of the tour features a scenic cruise on the stunning Ha Long Bay with its dramatic limestone karsts looming from the calm green water. This completes this well paced tour that combines all of Vietnam’s marvelous diversity.

About the Battle of Long Tan

On 18th August 1966, in a rubber plantation 40km south-east of Saigon, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops. Eighteen Australians lost their lives and 24 were wounded. Casualties for the North Vietnamese numbered in excess of 245. The 18th of August is regarded as Vietnam Veteran’s Day in Australia and New Zealand. The day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.
