Chiang Rai

Hill tribes • Trekking Tours • Golden Triangle

Chiang Rai may not have the international fame of its better-known neighbour, Chiang Mai, but this serene town is more than worthy of its spot on a traveller’s itinerary. It’s got a wealth of cultural sites and an enviable setting, making it a great base for exploring the once-infamous Golden Triangle. And best of all, with far fewer crowds than Chiang Mai, you can have more of that incredible scenery all to yourself.

Why visit Chiang Rai?

If Chiang Mai is where you go to relax after Bangkok, then Chiang Rai is where you go to unwind after Chiang Mai. This seriously chilled-out city offers visitors a deep cultural immersion, with iconic tourist favourites like the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), the Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten), and the Black House (Baan Dam Museum).

But hold on – Chiang Rai isn’t all about temples! Dive into the bustling Night Bazaar, where you can unearth unique local crafts and textiles, and savour some mouthwatering northern Thai dishes with Lanna flair. The vibe here is all about taking it easy and savouring every moment…and morsel.

Nestled in Thailand’s northernmost province, where it rubs elbows with Myanmar and Laos, Chiang Rai’s surroundings are a dream for adventurers. Picture yourself trekking through hill tribe villages, exploring lush forests, scaling high mountains, or cruising the mighty Mekong River. It’s the perfect base for exploration.

Other things to do in Chiang Rai:

  • Explore the intricately designed White Temple and Blue Temple: best to visit in early morning or late afternoon.
  • Marvel at the artistic Black House (Baan Dam Museum).
  • Visit the Golden Triangle and learn about its history at the Hall of Opium museum.
  • Trek through the lush landscapes of Doi Tung and visit hill tribe villages en route.

When to visit Chiang Rai

The dry season – from November to April – brings clear skies and lower humidity, making it an ideal time to visit…especially if you plan on doing some trekking. However, March and April can be verrrry hot, with temperatures soaring above 35°C. Phew!

Burning season also takes place during this time (late January to mid-May), when a lot of smoke might dampen the experience somewhat (although Chiang Rai will be even more peaceful then).

The high season in Chiang Rai is typically from November to February, when conditions are a bit more favourable. October is another nice month to visit as rainfall is low (it’s just at the end of rainy season) and accommodation is likely more widely available
