Pattaya

Lively nightlife • Floating market • Botanical gardens

Pattaya is a popular weekend getaway for Bangkok’s city slickers. But those in search of a quiet retreat won’t necessarily find it here! Rather, Pattaya is famed for its happening nightlife, its great shopping opportunities, its many resort hotels and its wide range of attractions: from the historical and spiritual to the downright kitsch. The city of Pattaya may not be to everyone’s taste…but it certainly isn’t boring.

Why visit Pattaya?

Pattaya city is only 2–3 hours from Bangkok. Thanks to its proximity to the Thai capital, plus its offerings of beaches, watersports, cocktail bars and other happy-holiday ingredients, it’s a popular weekend spot among locals and expats.

Less so for tourists, who tend to favour the more pristine islands of Koh Tao, Koh Phangan or Koh Lanta for a tropical retreat. However, for those short on time, those tracking down nightlife and casino spots or those with a family looking for a variety of activities, Pattaya has plenty to offer.

The formerly quiet fishing village is now lined with resorts, high-rise condos, 24-hour clubs and modern shopping malls. But it also includes a wealth of cultural attractions: like giant Buddhas, temples and floating markets, plus the chance to get out in nature with viewpoints and waterfalls.

The city is best-known for its nightlife – and the famed, neon-lit Walking Street, packed with bars and clubs, hosts some pretty wild parties and events.

Even so, Pattaya is also a great choice for families, especially those with older children: as attractions like Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, Nong Nooch Tropical Botanical Gardens, and Cartoon Network Amazone Waterpark are all outings that’ll keep them amused for hours.

Other top things to do in Pattaya

  • Sanctuary of Truth: Although not actually that old (it was built in 1981), this large, teak wooden castle and its carvings is Pattaya’s most impressive historical feature.
  • Pattaya Floating Market: The city’s mini Venice includes over 100 vendors and stalls, selling traditional Thai souvenirs and food. Divided into 4 segments, you can experience  the cultures of Northern, Southern, Central and North-Eastern Thailand as part of one boat tour.
  • Pattaya Beach: It may not offer the same serene beach vibes as other Thai islands – but there’s plenty to do on and around this attractive beach. Here’s where you can enjoy watersports, great restaurants, plentiful shops and more alternative offerings: from a teddy bear museum to a cabaret show.
