Koh Rong

Tropical beaches • Dense jungle • Adventure activities

The largest island in Sihanoukville province, Koh Rong island manages to maintain a feeling of peaceful beach escapism: with a side of watersports, jungle hikes and plenty of waterfalls thrown in. And whether you choose to be a beach bum, to trek in nature or to hit the beach bars, Koh Rong has all the ingredients of a perfect holiday. It was cast as the location of the TV series “Survivor” for good reason…this island truly is a tropical paradise.

Why visit Koh Rong?

Koh Rong appeals to solo travellers, couples and families alike because it’s got so much going on. From sandy coves and colourful coral reefs, perfect for snorkelling and diving, to jungle rivers with opportunities for ziplining, paddleboarding and kayaking, there’s plenty of things to do on Koh Rong.

Although of course, many visitors come here, or to its even quieter neighbour, Koh Rong Samloem, to do nothing at all. Simply to lounge on a deckchair or directly on the soft white sand, watching turquoise water in front and palm trees swaying overhead before checking out one of its beach bars for a refreshing cocktail…wish you were there yet?!

Our local travel team can help you turn that postcard image into your next trip. Koh Rong island offers you the perfect chance to relax, break free of ‘clock time’ and enjoy the slower pace of island life instead.

What to do in Koh Rong

Apart from sun-soaking on a Koh Rong beach – no judgement if that’s what you want to do for the entirety of your trip! – here are a few other activities on Koh Rong island:

  • Diving/snorkelling: Whether you rent equipment yourself or go on a boat trip with a private company, Koh Rong is home to some beautiful marine life – time to see it up close!
  • Lonely Beach: Living up to its name, this gorgeous stretch of deserted sand to the north of the island isn’t easy to reach…but it’s worth it!
  • Jungle treks: Inland, there’s some great walking trails within the dense jungle – and plenty of waterfalls to cool off in, afterwards.
  • Police Beach: Formerly the setting for all-night parties (which stopped around COVID), it’s interesting to see the now-deserted sandy beach, with local families trawling for crabs and the once-hopping bar shacks overgrown with tropical vines.
  • Watersports: Although kayaking and paddleboarding off the coast is a great way to spend an afternoon, for calmer waters – and a less strenuous workout! – head to the Mangrove River.
  • Cycle trip: Whether you’d rather a leisurely ride along the coastline or a more challenging route through the jungle, Koh Rong island’s trails offer an incredibly scenic way to bike around the island.
  • Boat trip to Koh Rong Samloem: Just a 30-40 minute journey, by ferry or private longboat, Koh Rong’s smaller sibling is well worth a visit for its amazing beaches – we recommend Saracen Bay to really savour the holiday vibes.
