Mui Ne is a conveniently close beach getaway for anyone in Saigon looking to escape the bustling crowds of the city. It used to be a sleepy hollow frequented by backpackers wanting to get off the beaten track. Today the town stretches along 10km of coastal road that is packed with a mixture of luxurious resorts and budget hotels as well as stylish shops and restaurants. Mui Ne has become a popular destination for Russians and is one of the only places in Vietnam where Russian language is eclipsing English on the signage. Despite its flaws Mui Ne is still perfect for the water sports enthusiast and is a world-renowned venue for kite surfing. The single strip of beach has strong winds and good waves making it perfect for surfers, wind surfers, stand up paddlers and kite surfers.
What to do and see in Mui Ne
Water Sports
Mui Ne has the best water sports in Vietnam – windsurfing, kite surfing and traditional surfing are all outstanding. You can rent boards from most hotels and several spots along the strip.
Relax on the beach
If adrenaline sports aren’t your thing, grab a beach lounger at one of the hotels, grab yourself a beer or cocktail and enjoy the sun.
Play on the dunes
Mui Ne’s sand dunes are a surreal addition to the landscape. Just a short drive from the city centre the dunes give you the feeling of being in the middle of a Middle Eastern desert. You can book a beach tour of the dunes or wander out and play by yourself.
How’s the food?
There is an abundance of deliciously fresh seafood so take advantage of the wonderful variety available. Almost any type of western cuisine is served at the many different restaurants and bars.
Quick Tips
Coastal erosion is becoming a big issue here. Sands tend to migrate up and down the strip. If you can’t find good beach where you’re staying, just take a wander down the strip and you’ll find something for you.
The best time to go to Mui Ne
Mui Ne’s unique microclimate has earned it the nickname of the sunniest town in Vietnam. It rarely rains here and year round the temperature averages 27c. Officially there are two seasons. Rainy season lasts from May to October but you can expect light showers every other day. Dry season runs from November to April. Best surfing is from August to December and the winds blow hard for the kite surfers from late October to late April.
