We bet you have never traveled like this before? Get ready to hit the tracks on the Bamboo Train in Battambang, Cambodia. Though most of the rail network in Cambodia, built by the French colonial government, was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge regime, there are some tracks still functioning just outside of Battambang. With the lack of good roads in the province, these tracks became the fastest and easiest means of transport for locals. They are now one of the biggest tourist attractions of Battambang.
The bamboo train is now considered as one of the unmissable activities in Battambang. So what is the bamboo train exactly? The best way to describe it would be a small bamboo-framed cart, with a bamboo mat placed on top whilst resting on top of two independent rail axles that are upcycled from damaged tanks left over from the war. The train is open-air and goes at a moderate speed making it a safe and thrilling adventure and the best way to see the surroundings.
A truly "once in a life time experience"
But how does one train line go in two different directions? Easy! If there is an oncoming train, the one with the lesser amount of weight or people, gets off, they completely dismantle the train, move it out their way and then put it back together on the other side of it’s obstruction. Did we mention they do this effortlessly and multiple times a day? A comical and remarkable sight to behold.Something to remember, there are two bamboo trains. One is newly built and is a complete tourist trap and does not offer the same experience as the other.Book the bamboo train as part of our awesome Battambang day tour.
