Mondulkiri

Forested mountains • Fascinating wildlife • Conservation projects

Mondulkiri Cambodia is the largest – and most sparsely populated – province in the country. Home to elephants and close to Irrawaddy dolphins, this off-the-beaten track destination is ideal for animal lovers. With its rolling hills, mountains and waterfalls, it’s perfect for those seeking hikes and jungle treks, too. Mondulkiri offers a chance to escape busy city life, to experience the opposite of beach lounging and instead, get active, get inspired and get up and close to nature.

Why visit Mondulkiri?

The eastern province of Mondulkiri is wild, mysterious and vast. Its dense, unexplored jungle doesn’t even factor into most travellers’ itineraries when planning their trip to Cambodia. But for others, this mystery is what makes Mondulkiri so appealing. They want to find those roads less travelled – and use the help of a local guide to explore them.

One of the best things to do in Mondulkiri is to spend time with elephants as part of the Elephant Valley Project. This experience is non-commercial and non-exploitative, FYI – instead, it seeks to help and support these magnificent creatures in their daily lives.

The project is just one of several programs under the Elephant Livelihood Initiative Environment (E.L.I.E) – a local NGO that aims to enhance the health and welfare of captive elephants, conserve the natural habitat of wild elephants, and support local communities who work with them.

You can watch how the project works, and get involved yourself, by taking part in a 2-day volunteering program on one of our Mondulkiri trips. You’ll be mucking in with the daily tasks of creating a great environment for the elephants, enjoying some treks through the forest and staying on site for one night for the full jungle experience. (Psst…after the second day, you can rest up in your hotel – you’ve earned it!)

Wanna get back to nature?

Step out of clock time and enjoy a holiday experience like no other. The jungle may not be for everyone but if you want to experience Mother Nature in all her glory – and help to protect her important wildlife while you’re at it – add Mondulkiri to your itinerary.

Our local travel team can help you to join a voluntary project if you like, or to explore the area if you’d prefer. From packing tips to arranging transfers, we’re here to help you build and customise your Mondulkiri adventure.
