Why visit Dalat?

Developed as a resort by the French in the early 1900s, much of Dalat’s colonial charm remains. It feels more European than Vietnamese in many ways – but through its busy streets, great street food and chaotic markets, manages a hybrid of the two cultures to enjoy.

Dalat Vietnam is a popular destination for international and domestic tourism alike. Those flying into Vietnam typically visit from Saigon, as it’s only a short flight (or a 7-hour bus journey) away. Perhaps they’ve heard about the beautiful scenery, delicious food and cafe culture…or maybe they’ve been travelling Southeast Asia for a while and they want something that reminds them a little more of home.

Domestic tourists come to snap photos of the beautiful flowers, to cool down from the harsh summer heat and to soak up the sights in and around the former colonial hill station that feels so different to elsewhere in Vietnam.

Best things to do in Dalat

If you’re wondering what to do in Dalat, fear not – there’s plenty to keep you occupied in and around the city.

But before we get into them, a note on Dalat weather. Yes, it is cool – and very refreshing if you’ve been enduring temperatures of nearly 40℃ elsewhere. But it can get cold at night – so just make sure you pack warm layers (if not, you can snap up plenty of clothes in Dalat Market, just off the central lake).

A raincoat is a must, and if you’re planning on an active holiday (biking, visiting waterfalls or trekking), you might want to consider the best time to visit Dalat. November to April are the most pleasant months, with cooler temperatures and less rain.

Whenever you choose to visit, here are some of the top activities to do in Dalat:

• Night Market: The sight of street food stalls lit up at night, with smoke and steam billowing from an array of tasty local dishes, is something you have to experience. Try Dalat’s signature pancake to keep you going as you wander around.
• Crazy House: Kitsch as hell, the bonkers architecture of this guesthouse/tourist attraction is hard to explain. You’ll just have to visit or better yet, stay there to have the place to yourself at night and in the early morning.
• Old Train Station: Check out the 20th century railway station, either to snap photos, visit the museum or to take a short ride on one of its vintage trains to Trai Mat (7km away) to visit Linh Phuoc pagoda.
• Cable Car Station: Located on Robin Hill, a trip up in the cable car offers spectacular views of Tuyen Lam lake and the Dalat countryside.
• Datlana Waterfalls: A short drive from the city (by local bus or private transfer), this stunning waterfall is perfect for a swim – or even a trip on its rollercoaster, if you’re so inclined! It can get busy, but the surrounding nature trails offer a chance to escape for forest walks.
• Golfing with a view: Dalat’s premium golf course offers beautiful views of Xuan Huong Lake. If golfing isn’t your thing, check out the flower gardens instead.
