Hua Hin

Royal palace • Street markets • Wildlife conservation

Perhaps the most laidback of Bangkon’s nearby beach resorts, Hua Hin is a favoured getaway for Bangkok royalty, its residents, and expats alike. Without any of the seediness of its neighbours, the royal resort of Hua Hin is far less commercialised or overdeveloped – and offers a wonderful cultural experience, 3 hours from the capital.

Why visit Hua Hin?

The pretty beachside town is great for families, older travellers and couples, due to its laidback nature, fine restaurants and luxury accommodation options.

Once a fishing village, then the location of the King’s summer place, Hua Hin has managed to retain its status as a peaceful and relaxing destination, with beautiful natural surroundings…which is more than can be said of its more commercialised cousins around the coast on the Gulf of Thailand.

Hua Hin has plenty to offer fans of the Great Outdoors: from a unique water jungle and marine national park to conservation awareness projects. Its daily walking street market is also a great opportunity to try famous Thai dishes while picking up some souvenirs…or just enjoying the buzz of bartering with the vendors. The Cicada Market on weekends offers more chances for unique arts and crafts, plus live entertainment in an atmospheric ampitheatre.

Other things to do in Hua Hin

  • Maruekhathaiyawan Palace: Home to Thai royals during the summer months, this teak palace and lush gardens is perched right on the white sand, with beautiful sea views.
  • Kaho Sam Roi National Park: Thailand’s first marine national park, 45km from Hua Hin, includes limestone hills that reach up to 600 metres, plus the impressive Phraya Nakhon Cave. Great for a day trip.
  • Vana Nava Water Jungle: An amazing feat of vision and organisation, this once-empty plot of land was transformed into a tropical jungle of 3.2 hectares in 2014 – and now includes plenty of attractions, slides and even a professional underwater studio.
  • Wildlife Friends Foundation: Check out their Full Day Experience activity to learn about responsible tourism and conservation – while getting to hang out with some of the elephants that the Foundation has rescued.
  • Hua Hin Beach: Despite its relative proximity to Thailand’s capital, Hua Hin beach remains pristine: with a long stretch of fine white sand, clear blue water and opportunities for horseback riding along the shoreline. Not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
