Enjoy a true Indiana Jones moment in this jungle setting!
After a tasty lunch at a local spot (not included), head east to the village of Kompong Phluk on the edge of Tonle Sap Lake. Hop on a traditional boat to glide through stilted houses and witness local life up close before drinking in the scenery of the peaceful lake.

Battamang offers a charming mix of colonial and postcolonial architecture, as well as ancient pagodas. It also has a burgeoning contemporary arts scene: complete with chic art spaces and the cafes that inevitably follow. Spend the day walking around its picturesque streets and exploring the Central Market…you’ll get to see more tomorrow!

Day 5: Battambang day tour
In the morning, a tuk tuk will bring you through winding streets and into the countryside – stopping to discover how traditional products, such as rice paper for spring rolls, dried banana snacks, rice wine and bamboo sticky rice are produced. Of course, you’ll get to sample all of these treats, too! Next, visit the pungent fish paste market, before having a rest and enjoying some fresh fruits and coconut at a local family’s home.
Continue to Wat Samrong Knong: this quiet site is well out of the way, and a memorial to the Khmer Rouge.
Time to journey southwest to Phnom Sampeau: a hill with limestone caves and panoramic views. Inside a cave on the mountain is another memorial, to those killed by the Khmer Rouge. Finally, take a ride on the fabulous and open-air Bamboo Train: a great way to explore the rural areas around this friendly riverside town.

Day 6: Battambang to Phnom Penh overland
Your driver will whisk you away on a morning adventure to Phnom Penh! On the way, stop by the pottery-making village of Kampong Chhnang and visit Phnom Oudong, where stupas hold the ashes of Buddha and ancient Khmer kings.
Watch out for the cheeky monkeys at Oudong Mountain! They can be a bit mischievous, so keep your distance and an eye on your stuff – they love to snatch snacks and water bottles!
Phnom Penh, the "Pearl of Asia," blends colonial charm with cosmopolitan city life, thanks to its lovely French architecture, wide boulevards and smattering of rooftop cocktail bars.
In the evening, treat yourself to a blind massage or take a leisurely stroll along the riverside as the sun sets. Enjoy cocktails and a fancy dinner…or hang out with locals along the riverfront. Just remember to keep an eye on your belongings – opportunistic theft is rare, but it can happen…so secure your bags and wallets, just in case.

After lunch (not included in price), explore the Royal Palace, home to the dazzling Silver Pagoda and its impressive collection of Buddha statues. Finally, head to Wat Phnom, the city’s only hill, where legend says Lady Penh discovered four Buddha statues in 1372, giving the city its name.

Just a heads up: bring cash (USD or Cambodian riel) because the island doesn’t take credit cards and there’s no ATM!
When you arrive at Koh Rong, don’t forget to revalidate your round-trip ferry ticket – miss that step, and you might be stuck! Once that’s sorted, check into your bungalow and let the relaxing beach vibes take over.
Koh Rong Samloem is a tropical paradise packed with fun activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming and exploring smaller nearby islands. It’s the perfect spot to chill out and soak in the carefree island atmosphere. For the rest of the day, relax and unwind…you’re on island time, now.

Frequently asked questions about Cambodia
Is Cambodia safe?
Admittedly, Cambodia doesn’t get the greatest rep in comparison to its neighbouring countries. It’s a poorer country than Thailand or Vietnam, and as such, petty crimes like theft can be more commonplace here. Cambodia is also known for a flourishing drug trade: yet there have recently been major crackdowns in response – so the country is becoming cleaner, safer and more tourist-friendly these days.
In our experience, Cambodia is safe for solo travellers (including female travellers), groups and families. Especially if you choose to book a tour with Wide Eyed Tours & Travel: because our local guides can advise you on things to do and things to avoid as you travel. Such as:
- When visiting busy areas at night – like the riverfront street in Phnom Penh – keep your belongings secure and on you at all times.
- Don’t drink the tap water and use bottled water to clean your teeth.
- Take extra care before crossing the road – look left, then right, then left again – to avoid any motorbikes or Tuk Tuks which may be zipping past the cars.
- If you want to go exploring on your own and don’t want to flag down a street Tuk Tuk, download PassApp – it works just like Uber to get you where you need, safely. (You can, of course, call our local travel team either and they’ll sort you out!)
Is Cambodia a rich or poor country?
Although Cambodia has a fast-growing economy, it’s still one of the poorest countries in Asia – beating only Laos and Myanmar in terms of GDP per capita. That’s its current state, at least: but the fact that it is a marketing hub, that it has a growing middle class and holds a lot of potential in terms of developing infrastructure plus international trade, means that mightn’t be the case that much longer.
Cambodia is certainly one to watch in terms of economic growth and, at least in the short-term, the country might expect to become quite wealthy overnight.
When travelling in Cambodia, however, this probably won’t be apparent just yet. And although there are good restaurants and bars to be discovered, you won’t be as spoiled for choice as, say in Bangkok or Ho Chi Minh city.
It also isn’t as cheap to travel through as its neighbours: while very affordable by Western standards, things like meals out or coffees are more like a few dollars less than what you’d pay at home, rather than a fraction of the price.
Is Cambodia good for tourists?
Cambodia is a great tourist destination for the variety of activities on offer and the diversity of its landscape: all accessible in even a short trip. Unlike Vietnam, where you might spend your two-week holiday travelling up the coast, you could see Cambodia’s main sites, plus relax on the beaches down south, in the same amount of time.
With Tuk Tuks and PassApp making it easy to get around the cities, train lines from north – south and air conditioned buses or express minivans covering everywhere in between, Cambodia travel is both a simple and a pleasurable experience.
Sure, the food may not be as outstanding as Vietnam or Thailand – but there are plenty of local specialities to enjoy (and our travel team can help you to track them down!) Plus, if you’re hankering for Western dishes, you’ll be spoilt for choice.
Really though, Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor Wat are among the biggest reasons for tourists to visit Cambodia. No matter if they’re busy, if the heat is blinding, if you’re recovering after a few too many drinks from the night before…they are simply splendid. They won’t disappoint: and neither will Cambodia.
What makes Cambodia a great travel destination?
Cambodia is celebrated for its stunning ancient temples, especially Angkor Wat, which is one of the largest religious monuments in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Beyond its historical significance, visitors are drawn to its vibrant culture, friendly locals, beautiful landscapes, and delicious cuisine. The country offers a mix of adventure and relaxation, with opportunities for trekking in the Cardamom Mountains, exploring coastal towns like Sihanoukville, and enjoying the serene beauty of the Mekong River. With its rich history and welcoming atmosphere, Cambodia provides a unique and enriching travel experience.
