Why visit Koh Yao?

Nestled between Phuket and Krabi, in Phang Nga province, both islands offer an escape from the mainstream. The predominantly Muslim population – accounting for 90% of residents – means that the islands are far more conservative, respectful and peaceful than their counterparts.

No wild, all-night beach parties to be found here. While you can get alcohol from some places on the islands, boozing certainly isn’t considered a key activity. And while there’s plenty of gorgeous beaches to explore and cycling/hiking trails for those wanting to get active, you won’t find either place brimming with kayaking tours, scuba divers or stand-up paddleboarders like you would in Phuket.

So what’s the difference between the two? Well, Koh Yao Noi is smaller and has better-developed infrastructure. It’s great for those looking for a peaceful tropical retreat with a splash of luxury thrown in…especially if they stay at the fabulous Paradise Koh Yao resort. In terms of Koh Yao Noi things to do, you could spend hours – days, even! – swimming and snorkelling off its beautiful beaches, or gazing out at the view of Phang Nga bay. Life moves slowly here…but that’s the point.

Meanwhile, the larger Koh Yao Yai island offers an even quieter vacation: with hardly any tourists, isolated beaches and a chance to truly immerse yourself in local life and nature – whether that means hanging out in a picturesque fishing village, or booking a private boat trip for a jungle trek.
