Frequently asked questions about Hoi An
What are the best things to do in Hoi An?
There’s plenty of things to keep you entertained: from cycling around the rice fields, to joining a street food tour or a cooking class, making traditional masks or lanterns, shopping, spa dates and more. But really, one of Hoi An’s greatest charms is to sit in a scenic spot (by the beach or Old Town) with a great coffee and watch the world go by.
Where should I stay in Hoi An?
It depends on what kind of trip you’re after. For a beach holiday, head to An Bang (more developed), Tan Thanh (a little quieter) or Cua Dai (the most local). You could also stay in one of many boutique hotels or family homestays around the ancient town. Cam Thanh and An My are lovely areas, too: about halfway between town and the beach, surrounded by rice fields. If you want to escape the crowds, and are happy to get around by bike, shuttle or taxi, either is a great option.
How many days in Hoi An?
That’s a tough one. Many people plan on staying just a few days and end up extending their trip to a week, or longer. Some of the large expat population here came here years ago for a ‘short visit’...and still haven’t left! We’d recommend spending at least 3 or 4 nights here, bearing in mind you’ll probably find it hard to say goodbye, too.
What is the best month to visit Hoi An?
The town is a year-round destination: although Hoi An weather can affect your enjoyment in terms of exploring everything the place has to offer! You can count on experiencing 2 seasons here: with the dry season running from February to August and rainy season from October to January (although you can expect showers during the shoulder months, too).
February through to April and the months of August/September are perhaps the most pleasant times to visit in terms of temperature as the summer months get pretty hot. Still, you’ll often be rewarded for surviving the building humidity with a refreshing and abrupt thunderstorm, followed by a magnificent sunset. Hoi An weather isn’t all that extreme, outside of the rainy season anyway – and even that can be a real spectacle to witness.
