Frequently asked questions about Hue
Is Hue worth visiting in Vietnam?
Even if you’re more into beaches than museums, cocktails than culture (and hey, no judgement, we love cocktails, too!), Hue is more than worth a visit. The leafy streets within the walls of the Citadel are an absolute pleasure to stroll, the Perfume River is a dream to cycle along and the market is just so fun, so chaotic, so…well…Vietnamese, it’d be a shame to miss it! If anything, Hue makes a handy stopover to break up your journey between the north and southern Vietnam. You may be travelling on to Da Nang or Hoi An anyway but we’d recommend taking in this important part of Vietnamese heritage if you can.
Why is Hue Vietnam famous?
Hue is famous for many reasons. In terms of its ancient significance, it was the former political and cultural capital of Vietnam, home to the last royal family (the Nguyen Dynasty) and now has plenty of tombs, pagodas, castles and ruins for travellers to explore its history. More recently, the 1968 Battle of Hue was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. Hue, which marked the border between North and South, suffered considerable damage during what became known as the Tet Offensive. Hue’s significant buildings and monuments were neglected after the war in 1975; however policy changes since have led to historical areas of the city being restored and Hue moving forward as both a center for tourism and as a transport hub.
Should I visit Hue or Hoi An?
Short answer? Both, if you have the time! Hue has got so much to offer in terms of culture, history and food options…but of course, Hoi An has that, too – plus the added bonus of shopping, numerous spas, rice fields and the beach! If you only have time for one, check out Hoi An. But our guides can help you with a tailor made tour that could take in both, and a transfer from Hoi an to Hue.
How many days do you need in Hue Vietnam?
Many tourists just stay for a night so they can visit the Citadel in the morning and travel onwards. But we’d recommend at least 2 days in Hue – better yet, 3 – so you can see the ancient city in the early morning and around sunset, with extra time for cycling along the Perfume River, trying local dishes, and visiting the market.
